Light In The Dark - Making The Record

28 Days of Posts (Day 27) - One Day To Go

Well, we are one day away from the official launch of Light In The Dark. Can't even believe it.

If you have't heard any of the songs yet, today is your lucky day. Listen to all 14 tracks and hear why one person said, "Can I please marry you!? Your voice is amazing! The instruments are amazing! The lyrics are super sweet and super catchy. I'm sure they will be stuck in my head for days."

Be sure and tell your friends too, that today is the last day they can preorder Light In The Dark on iTunes and get the discounted rate. It's also the last day to get over $40 in extras - FREE - on the Pre Order Page.

28 Days of Posts (Days 17-21) - Making Excuses

One week from today, Light In The Dark will be launched into the world! I'm excited and anxious, but ready. As you may know, in conjunction with the release, we have been doing a series called 28 Days of Posts. This is where there is a new post each day, leading up to the release of the record. Over the last week, however, I haven't exactly lived up to the one post a day mantra...so this post is a summary of days 17-21. The excuse I'm using is that I have a baby...but then again, that is my excuse for everything right now.

Days 17-21 in a Nutshell:

1. James is super excited about the release. When I told him that we were only one week away, this was the face he made:

"For real, dad?"

"For real, dad?"

2. I lost my wedding ring playing Street Hoops at Chuckecheese. James immediately thought it was hilarious.

Our efforts to recover the ring were in vain and I now have a 10 ticket wedding ring.

Chuck may be smiling right now, but we'll see who has the last laugh.

3. Our CD release shows back in GA were a huge success. Thanks to everyone who came out!

4. The First Single and Light In The Dark (Acoustic Sampler)

We've been previewing songs from Light In The Dark, and will finish out the final four songs this week, but here are a few that we've already taken a look at.

Get the Acoustic Sampler and $40 worth of extras - FREE - when you preorder the album on iTunes. Visit the PreOrder Page for details. Only one week left to claim the extras!

28 Days of Posts (Day 16) - She Walked Away

'She Walked Away' is probably the darkest song on the album. It deals with suicide and observes a few life events, that bring this girl to the point of despair.

I forget who I heard this from, but they said that sad songs actually make us feel better. I believe them. It's like we know somebody else is dealing with the same thing which, in some way, helps.

I hope the song encourages you. And if life sucks right now, know that it will get better.

28 Days of Posts (Day 15) - Take A Ride With Me

I wrote 'Take A Ride With Me' in one sitting, when I was working on Music Row.

There's a line in the chorus that says, "I need you like a penny needs a wishing well" which I liked, when it first came out, but wanted to change. If any Garth Brooks fans are reading this, you might know that Garth has a line in the song 'Wrapped Up In You' that is virtually identical. Different melody of course, but same words.

Anyway, I ultimately couldn't take it out of the song because I love the relationship between a penny and a wishing well. The penny derives much of it's value from the wishing well, and is virtually worthless apart from it. And so, the line remained, and this is what we ended up with.

28 Days of Posts (Day 14) - Halfway There

Well, we're halfway through our 28 Days of Posts series, leading up to the release of Light In The Dark. This also means we're only two weeks away from the release date! Crazy. Can't even believe it. We will continue to preview the rest of the record, and if you haven't had a chance to listen yet, here are tracks 1-7:

28 Days of Posts (Day 13) - Let It Burn

Track 8 is a song called 'Let It Burn' and it is the second song, on the album, that I wrote with Joseph Patton (The first song was 'When The Well Runs Dry'). JP had the idea/melody for this song, as well, and he had the opening line that goes, "she underlines her bible every morning. She prays each night before she goes to bed." Almost immediately, I followed with the line "but she won't admit that she knows Jesus, when the devil comes around and turns her head". We both kind of looked at each other like, "I don't even know what that means but I like it.." and  took off with the storyline, from there.

What we came up with is one of my favorite songs on the album.

28 Days of Posts (Day 11) - Down Here

Track 6 is a song called 'Down Here'. It is the last song that I wrote for the record. Finishing it, in fact, just a few weeks before we went into the studio.

I wanted to put an easy going tune on the album, but didn't have one in the ole repertoire. What I did have, was the last line of the chorus, which goes, "you can take it all with a grain of salt and a wedge of lime." It sounded like there was something there but I wasn't sure what.

The song was written over the course of about a month and I chronicled the writing process, in an earlier post titled Piecing Together A Song. Hopefully you'll find the song a nice companion as the weather warms and you make your way to the water.

28 Days of Posts (Day 10) - Athens and Roswell CD Release Shows

Today and tomorrow are gonna be fun. We've got a show tonight at General Beauregard's in Athens, GA and then tomorrow night at The Roswell Tap in Roswell, GA.

Both of these cities are special to me. Athens, is home to my alma mater, The University of Georgia, and it is where I first started playing music. The Roswell/Alpharetta area is where I grew up and whenever anyone asks me where I'm from, I always say that I'm from Alpharetta. Gotta rep that city. (Insert double fist bump on the chest)

Needless to say, I'm excited to be back and hope to see you out at one of the shows.
